Calculate Space Requirements
Pizza Oven Space & Safety Requirements
NFPA Safety Clearances: Wood-fired ovens require 36" (3 feet) minimum clearance from combustible materials per NFPA 211. Gas ovens need 24" (2 feet). Electric ovens need 12" (1 foot). These are minimums - more is better for safety and comfort. Check local fire codes as they may be stricter.
Surface Requirements: Never place ovens on combustible surfaces. Concrete, pavers, stone, and brick are ideal. Wood decks require a heat shield or fireproof mat. Grass/dirt is unsafe and unstable. The oven should sit on a level, stable surface that won't shift or crack under 200-500 lb weight.
Overhead Clearance: Need minimum 8 feet vertical clearance from roof overhangs, branches, and structures. Wood-fired ovens produce flames and hot exhaust that can ignite overhangs. Even covered patios need adequate ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
Working Space: Beyond the oven itself, allow 3-4 feet in front for the pizza maker to work comfortably. Side clearances prevent burns when accessing the oven. A 24" oven in a 60" space leaves only 18" on each side after required clearances - tight but workable. Bigger spaces allow larger ovens and more comfortable operation.
